Choosing the right fence height is about more than just style. It’s about local zoning laws, privacy goals, safety needs, and property layout. Whether you’re in Burlington County, Camden, or anywhere in South Jersey, understanding what’s allowed and what works best can save you time, money, and frustration.
Here’s what homeowners need to know before installing a fence in New Jersey.
What Heights Are Allowed by NJ Towns?
Fence height rules vary by township, but here’s a general guide based on zoning laws across Burlington County and surrounding areas:
| Fence Location | Max Height (Typical) |
Rear Yard | 6 feet |
Side Yard | 4 to 6 feet |
Front Yard | 3 to 4 feet |
| Corner Lot (Vision Triangle) | Often limited to 3-4 feet with 50% opacity forvisibility |
Important: Every township has its own ordinances. Some require zoning permits or restrict certain materials above specific heights.
Before building, we verify and submit permits for towns like:
- Mount Laurel
- Medford
- Moorestown
- Burlington Township
- Chesterfield
- Evesham
And more across New Jersey
Check out our Fence Permit Guide for specific rules in your town.
What Height Works Best?
Beyond local code, think about your purpose. Here’s how height impacts function:
6-Foot Fence
- Best for privacy and security
- Blocks views from neighbors
- Common for vinyl or wood fences
- Perfect for backyards, pool enclosures, and corner lots (where allowed)
4-Foot Fence
- Ideal for front yards or decorative use
- Often required in front yard areas for visibility
- Great for picket styles or aluminum fences
3-Foot Fence
- Meets most township standards for front yards
- Often used in historic districts or HOA-controlled communities
- Offers a subtle border without obstructing views
Pool Fence Height Requirements
In New Jersey, pool fences must meet Building Officials and Code Administrators (BOCA) or IRC (International Residential Code) code which typically means:
- Minimum 4 feet tall
- No more than 2” clearance at the bottom
- No larger than 4” gaps between pickets
- Gates must be self-closing and self-latching
- No climbable horizontal rails within 48”
- Latching mechanism at least 54” from ground
Vinyl, aluminum, or chain link with non-climbable mesh can all qualify but only when installed to spec. We handle this for you.
| Material | Common Heights | Best Use |
| Vinyl | 4, 5, 6 ft | Privacy, security, low upkeep |
Wood | 4, 5, 6 ft | Custom look, natural style |
Aluminum | 4, 5, 6 ft | Decorative, low upkeep |
Chain Link | 4, 5, 6 ft | Utility, pet enclosures |
Custom configurations are available including lattice tops, step-down panels, and mixed-material solutions.
What If You Need Different Heights?
- Want 6 ft in back and 4 ft in front? That’s possible and often times required per township zoning regulations.
- Have a sloped yard? We’ll use stepped or racked panels to match grade.
- Corner lot? You may need to reduce height near driveways or intersections.
We design layouts that follow code while still giving you privacy and function.
